Guatemala

The Guatemalan flag was adopted in 1871, but its origin dates back to the Central American Federation (1823-1839). Two blue bands represent the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. One white band denotes peace and purity. The green national bird symbolizes freedom and the inscription: Libertad 15 de Septiembre DE 1821 is original date of independence from Spain). A pair of guns is a willingness to defend a pair of crossed swords representing honor. The laurel wreath symbolizes victory.
