Malta

Two equal vertically white and red bands symbolize the knights of St. Johana from Jerusalem. They ruled the island from 1530 to 1898. The English King George VI. awarded the George Cross the islanders for heroism in World War II. This flag was flying freely over the island in 1964 when Malta achieved independence from Great Britain.
