Kiribati

The original British colony of Gilbert Islands achieved independence in 1979 and proclaimed the Republic of Kiribati. The new flag of Kiribati has the same design as the original coat of arms. The frigatebird symbolizes authority and freedom. The sun symbolizes the position of islands on the equator. Three white stripes represent the three island groups - Gilbert, Line and Phoenix. Blue represents the Pacific ocean.
